Just as these thoughts were going through her head Jeremy walked in the door.
“Hey babe, are you almost ready? We have dinner reservations at 7:30. We can’t be late or they’ll give them away.”
“I’m ready, just waiting for you. How about a kiss?”
His passion was consuming – she felt like she was drowning, just from a kiss. He gave it his all, just like everything else he did.
“Ok, I’ll meet you downstairs. My parents will already be there, waiting.”
“Don’t you want to freshen up, unpack? You did just literally walk in the door.”
“No, I’m good, I washed up at the airport, I’m fine.”
“Ok, I’m right behind you.”
And he was gone. She finished putting on her lipstick, Pink Paradise, not her usual Ruby Flaming Red. She didn’t know what to expect from his parents so she thought going with the pastel virgin look was best.
He was waiting in his Mercedes 450SL at the curb. She loved getting into his car, she always felt like a celebrity with cameras flashing as she slipped in, escaping the paparazzi.
“Hey beautiful, you look stunning, as usual.”
“Why thank you. You aren’t so bad yourself.” She flashed her most seductive smile at Jeremy, just to let him know what she was thinking for dessert. He flashed a smile back that she took to say, sounds good to me. It was amazing to her that they already had an unspoken language between them. Dare she say it, soulmates.
They got to the restaurant at 7:20. Jeremy’s parents were waiting out front. The valet took Jeremy’s keys and drove off in his car. Jeremy grabbed her hand as he walked up to his parents.
“Mom, dad, this is Stacy, the love of my life.”
Stacy blushed but smiled brightly for his parents.
“So nice to meet you, finally.” She took each of their hands in hers. His father was warm and friendly – Stacy could see who Jeremy took after. His mother seemed almost distracted, like she was afraid to look at Stacy, afraid to take her hand. She coughed and pulled her hand away almost as soon as she took it, as if needing an excuse not to shake hands, not to get too close. And she looked away, looked at her son, then glanced quickly at Stacy. She seemed worried, fearful. Strange, very strange, Stacy thought.

She was falling in love, she knew it and there was no stopping it from happening. They had been together for a little more than six months now and she was thinking he would be asking her to move in soon. She wanted to wait, not to rush into anything, but she knew deep down that she would say ‘yes’. The only drawback, if there was a drawback, was the amount of time he spent away. But he was in sales, and that is what people in sales did. They traveled, a lot. Sales technology to be exact, ie, big bucks! That meant, with her measly salary as an editor they would be able to buy a home soon after marrying and then have children and a beautiful home in the suburbs with their son and daughter going to the best schools, but she was getting ahead of herself. Way ahead!
She hadn’t even met his parents yet. But that was going to happen tonight. They were finally going out to dinner with ‘mom and dad.’ He had already met her mom – her dad would have loved Jeremy. It was times like this that she really missed her dad. He had an intuition about people that she always relied on. She really could use his help with this since, as her dad told her many times, 'you make too many decisions with your heart....you also need to use your head.'
Jeremy was a man’s man, but also a ladies man. Not in the way that he flirted with women but that women looked at him, and she could see, even if he couldn’t, or so he said, that they lusted after him, also. He was a very handsome man. Almost too good to be true, really. She would ask him again and again, why aren’t you married? And he would say the same thing again and again, “I was waiting for you.” Ah yes, the perfect man, so attentive, so charming, so loving, when he was around. Again, the one flaw, if there was any to be found.

Dannie found the earrings in a costume jewelry shop at Wiers beach. She had never seen anything like them before and had to have them. The earrings were square with red lips on both sides. The image changed from a full-mouth pout to a kiss when they moved back and forth on your ears. Back and forth, a pout, a kiss, a pout, a kiss. It reminded her of a toy that you would get in a Cracker Jack box that had a picture of a train on a cardboard square and when you moved it, the train looked like it was moving. Dannie loved her new earrings and decided to wear them to a party that night.
She didn’t know many people at the party since she was tagging along with a friend who had another friend who was going. It was crowded with so many people and the majority were her age. Dannie was sure others were as self-conscious as she was and she tried to relax.
Soon after arriving, her friend wandered off with a few other people she knew and Dannie was left sitting among a group of young women who were talking about make-up, their boyfriends, or a new outfit they just bought. They seemed friendly and soon included Dannie in the conversation. One of them noticed her kissing lips earrings right away and exclaimed how much she loved them. She asked if she could try them on. Dannie, wanting always to please and appear friendly, agreed to let her see them up close and naively took the earrings off, handing them to the woman. At that moment another woman came over and sat next to Dannie asking who she came with, if she knew the woman who lived in the apartment, what she did for work and a few other engaging questions. She seemed genuinely interested in Dannie.
By the time Dannie looked up, the woman she had handed her earrings to was gone and the woman who seemed to be interested in her had also quickly disappeared. Along with her special kissing lips earrings.
